The last time the Leafs were in the Stanley Cup finals was 1967.
But hey, at least they won! ^^^

The answers to all your questions are at the NHL web site. Three
guesses as to what that URL might be. (Hint: it's neither
whitehouse.com, whitehouse.org, or whitehouse.gov.)

What have their fans been doing for the past 39 years? How inept can a
franchise be?

They've only been around since 1998, in the expansion that brought MLB to
Phoenix as well. The NFL St. Louis Rams went 49 years between their NFL title
as the Los Angeles Rams and their win in Super Bowl XXIV, and we all know how
long the Chicago Cubs have been waiting...

True...without a championship this coming season, they'll be 60 years in
waiting, which is just shorter than the 61 the Cubs have been trying to get
-into- the World Series, and a lot shorter than the 98 years since they last
won one.

To make the case for the Cubs being the paragon of ineptitude, you'd have
to demonstrate that they're *trying*. Since there's evidence that the
Tribune Corp doesn't particularly see any need to win, since they sell
out the ballpark and do well from TV rights anyway, I don't think that's
the case.

I'd point to the 1969 run (and subsequent September collapse to the Mets),
along with the 2003 "close, but no banana" foul ball that could have been
caught against the Marlins in the NL finals as evidence that the cosmos is
aligned against the Cubs. That, and the goat's curse. ;-)

Even worse, considering Dollar Bill Wirtz's Chicago Blackhwaks haven't hoisted
the Cup since 1961...that's the longest drought in the NHL, at present. (The
Blues are still looking for their first Cup, after 38 seasons - of the other
four survivors of the 1967 expansion, Dallas (nee Minnesota), Pittsburgh, and
Philadelphia have won it, leaving the Kings on the outside looking in.
Buffalo and Vancouver still are looking for their first, from 1970-71; from
the 1972-73 expansion, the Islanders won four in a row (1980 through 1983),
and Calgary (originally Atlanta) has skated off with two; from 1974-75, New
Jersey (originally the KC Scouts) has won a couple, and Washington's still
waiting; from the 1979-80 merger with the WHA, Edmonton has picked up five
Cups, Colorado (Québec in the WHA and until 1995 in the NHL) has claimed two,
Carolina (New England in the WHA) is one game away from their first, and
Phoenix (Winnipeg in the WHA) is still waiting. Of the nine teams added by
expansion since 1991, only Tampa Bay has carted off the Cup, in 2004.)

I *would* overlook the 2003 one, considering they did it to the not so mighty

Phoenix (Winnipeg in the WHA) is still waiting.
also note that both Winnipeg and New England WHA teams were merged into the
NHL as the Winnipeg Jets and Hartford Whalers before they were moved to
Pheonix and Carolina. Also, Kansas City Scouts 1974 became the Colorado
Rockies in 1976 and eventually the New Jersey Devils in 1982.
